This semester Huamao Foreign Language School held a lot of meaningful bilingual experiential learning activities for our elementary students. Here, we would like to show you one of the special events themed “The Southeast Asia Tour”.
In line with our school’s vision— “Learners of character, Leaders with global perspectives”, we aim to inspire our students to constantly broaden their horizons. Travelling around the world is one great way to achieve this goal, so we had planned a journey to one of the countries in Southeast Asia for the primary school students this year. However, due to the pandemic and border control regulations, this plan inevitably had to be replaced by a virtual one. Nevertheless, our teachers have creatively “transformed” our school into 10 different countries based on ASEAN. As such, our students get to “travel around the 10 countries in one day”. They learnt about the cultures and traditions such as food, sports, costumes, architectures, and even the geographical environment. For example, our grade 3 students had tour-guided us the landmarks and buildings of Singapore and lively showed us the local food and costumes of this beautiful Garden City. In addition, our grade 5 students became advocates for sustainable ecological environment and what we human beings can do for the Earth. They have created the murals of Myanmar’s forests and marine life so vividly and we learnt about many unique wildlife species.
Besides the thorough preparation of our students, teachers have also provided a great series of assessments for the activity. “Learning Passport”, for instance, is an effective evaluation utilized to assess our students’ learning skills. In particular, we designed 10 boxes represented 10 countries, and each time when students virtually visited one country, we would stamp in the respective boxes. What’s more, we also listed out the standards of our school’s values and core competencies skills in the passport. Teachers have to observe and evaluate students’ learning and their performance and at the same time assessing their cognitive development. Ultimately, we aimed to develop each learner’s inner values as well as competencies that they could apply across other disciplines and even in their future life.
