On July 7th, Kathmandu: The highly anticipated Model United Nations (SG MUN) 3.0 organized by Swastishree Gurukul IB World School concluded grandly on Sunday. The event was organized to create an important opportunity for students to develop life skills, broaden their perspectives and knowledge, and contribute meaningfully to solving global issues.
The program, directed by Adish Binod Pokhrel, saw enthusiastic participation from 200 representatives from 37 schools, including 35 from the valley and 2 from Pokhara and Nepalgunj. This year, there was also participation from a school in India.
The chief guest at the closing ceremony, Chewan Rai, the founding president of the Youth Thinkers’ Society, encouraged the participants to continue applying the skills they learned over the three days. Sharing his experience of his first Model United Nations, he emphasized how such events help develop children’s speaking, thinking, writing, and research skills. He also inspired the participants to use the knowledge and skills they acquired to make a positive impact on their society and country.
The school’s principal, Neha K.C., expressed happiness over the positive changes the event brought to all the participants, congratulating all the participating schools, student representatives, organizing committee, and sponsors on the program’s success.
During the three-day event, student representatives engaged in deep discussions on contemporary global issues across various committees such as the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Women (UNW), World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Security Council (UNSC), and International Press (IP). They also worked on solutions to real-world problems by representing different nations.
In the DISEC, North Korea won the Best Delegate award, Vietnam the Outstanding Delegate, China the Honorable Mention, and Pakistan the Best Position Paper. In the UNW, Turkey won Best Delegate, Afghanistan Outstanding Delegate, India and Iran Honorable Mention, and the Netherlands Best Position Paper. In WHO, Palestine won Best Delegate, Germany Outstanding Delegate, the USA Honorable Mention, and Australia Best Position Paper. In the UNHRC, the USA won Best Delegate and Best Position Paper, and Ethiopia won Outstanding Delegate.
In the UNSC, Syria won Best Delegate, the USA Outstanding Delegate, and Russia and China received Honorable Mention. In UNEP, Honduras won Best Delegate, Brazil Outstanding Delegate, Cameroon Honorable Mention, and Malaysia Best Position Paper, with verbal mentions to France, Zimbabwe, Panama, and Germany. In the IP, BBC won Best Reporter, Catalan News Outstanding Reporter, and special mentions went to India, IRNA, and Afghan Islamic Press.
The school’s Managing Director, Mina Maharjan Chitrakar, and Principal Neha K.C. presented tokens of appreciation to the chief guest, guests, school representatives, and sponsors.
