This past week, young leaders from around the globe gathered in Istanbul for the ISA Youth Leadership Encounter, a program rich in cultural exchange, leadership development, and exploration of Turkey’s vibrant heritage.
Arrival and Welcome Dinner
The week began with a warm welcome as participants arrived in Istanbul, settling in and gathering for an introductory dinner. This first evening set the tone for a memorable week, bringing together students, teachers, and leaders from diverse backgrounds eager to share experiences and learn from one another.
Cultural Exploration and Keynote Sessions
The next few days saw a variety of enriching activities. Delegates participated in cultural and educational sessions at the Ramı Culture Centre, where esteemed speakers, including Turkey’s Minister of Agriculture and the Rector of Istanbul University, highlighted the significance of international partnerships and cultural preservation. Interactive workshops allowed delegates to dive into Turkish heritage arts like calligraphy, marbling, and tile art, providing a hands-on understanding of Turkey’s intangible heritage.
Historic Tours and Republic Day Festivities
Participants explored Istanbul’s historic sites, visiting landmarks such as the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and Topkapi Palace. The Republic Day celebration was a highlight, with a concert at the Atatürk Culture Center bringing everyone together to celebrate Turkey’s national pride and history.
Leadership Activities and UNESCO Simulation
The week continued with presentations and an engaging simulation of a UNESCO Committee on Tangible and Intangible Heritage, where students took on roles, debated, and collaborated on projects to protect world heritage. This activity fostered global awareness and honed the delegates’ leadership and communication skills.
Farewell Bosphorus Cruise and Closing Ceremony
To conclude the event, participants enjoyed a farewell dinner and awards ceremony during a scenic Bosphorus cruise. The evening celebrated the friendships formed, knowledge gained, and leadership insights developed over the week.
The ISA Youth Leadership Encounter 2024 provided participants with unforgettable experiences, lifelong connections, and a deeper appreciation of international collaboration and cultural heritage. We look forward to seeing these young leaders continue their journeys as global citizens!
