Agora Sant Cugat International School students participate in the National High School Model United Nations (NHSMUN) in New York

International Schools Association

A selected team of 17 students from Agora Sant Cugat International School flew to the city of New York at the beginning of March to participate in the world’s largest and most prestigious MUN conference, the National High School Model United Nations. Guided by their MUN Director, Peter Martinez, and the School Counselor, Flor Blas, our students excelled alongside some of the world’s top secondary schools.

Model United Nations (MUN) events are an important experience for students to develop their critical skills, understand global issues, gain cultural awareness and empathy, encourage teamwork and collaboration, provide leadership opportunities and networking connections, prepare for future careers and encourage civic engagement.

Our students, Sara Rosales Pernas and Xiao Tao Zhou, won the Award of Excellence for their work in the Security Council and, in recognition for their diplomacy in the International Organisation for Migration, Martina Landabaso Jiménez and Carla Iranzo Granja, were asked to give a speech at the closing ceremony in front of the 3000 participants.

Another highlight of the event was when ASCIS was publically recognised and our MUN Director, Peter Martinez, was called to the podium to be congratulated for having brought outstanding teams to the NHSMUN for five years running and we congratulate the entire 2025 team for shining and displaying the excellence ASCIS has come to be known for.

Once the conference was over, our participants spent several days visiting and appreciating the sights in New York including The Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the 9/11 Memorial, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The American Museum of Natural History, and the Museum of Modern Art.

Our students and teachers returned home happy and fulfilled after experiencing a unique platform to develop their critical skills, gain a deeper understanding of global issues and foster a sense of empathy and collaboration. These kind of experiences not only enrich our students’ education but also prepare them to be informed and engaged citizens in an increasingly interconnected world.
