Agora Sant Cugat International School celebrated the I Agora Maths Challenge on Wednesday 3rd June, a day created to enjoy Mathematics in a different way through challenges, concentration, excitement and a great desire to learn.
Students from Primary 5 to ESO 4 participated in an experience designed to put their mathematical skills to the test, share learning with students from different age groups and discover Mathematics through curiosity, logical thinking and creativity.
The Agora Maths Challenge was created with the aim of becoming the first of many mathematical competitions and, with the hope of growing in the coming years, bringing together students from other Agora schools too.
Students faced different mathematical challenges adapted to their age group and there were moments of great concentration, some nerves and, above all, a strong desire to take part in an experience designed especially for them. As one Primary student shared, “It was a day full of concentration, intensity and lots of emotion. Finishing such an interesting test with positive feelings was very special.”
Beyond the results, the Agora Maths Challenge was an opportunity to remember that Mathematics can also be about play, challenges, curiosity and creativity. Solving a problem is not only about finding an answer; it is about thinking, trying different approaches, making mistakes, trying again and learning throughout the process.
After the most intense part of the morning, students had time to rest, share their experiences with their classmates and enjoy a group activity. The day also included a magic show, which added a moment of surprise and excitement before the awards ceremony in the Auditorium Josep Carreras.
During the final ceremony, as well as recognising the participants of the Agora Maths Challenge, the Catalan Cangur Mathematics Test Diplomas were also awarded; highlighting our students’ hard work, perseverance and mathematical talent throughout the year. For many of them, the experience was a way to demonstrate everything they had learnt and to face new challenges with confidence. As one student shared, “What I liked the most was being able to put everything we have learnt at school to the test.”
It was also a day for students from different year groups to share the same passion for learning, in an atmosphere of teamwork, motivation and enthusiasm for mathematics.
We would like to congratulate all the students who took part in the I Agora Maths Challenge for their positive attitudes, their ability to concentrate and their willingness to take on new challenges. We also thank our Mathematics team of staff for making this initiative possible and hope this is only the beginning of many more Agora Maths Challenges in the future.
