¡Agora Portals IS has been awarded the ECOESCUELA GREEN FLAG!

International Schools Association

We are very proud to inform you that we have been awarded the Green Flag.

We are aware of the importance of environmental education for our future. Since our way of living with the environment is a key factor in the future of the planet, at Agora Portals, we decided to think globally and act locally. This is why we are involved in the Eco-Schools programme. This programme helps us to analyse our school to see how we can reduce our ecological footprint, focusing on three aspects; waste, energy and water. The programme includes and motivates everyone, involving local communities and improving attitudes. Over the last three years we have carried out many improvement actions, lots of them proposed by our own pupils, we know that they are the ones who are going to change the future with the values they learn today. We now know that the best waste is that which is not generated. That is why we promote the use of flasks instead of plastic bottles along with snack holders instead of single-use wrappers.

And for the waste that is generated, we try to separate it correctly; recycling bins have been installed in the classrooms, in the playgrounds and we have a green point which is emptied daily by Calvià Town Hall. Several projects have resulted from this, a graffiti competition for the panels of the green point, weekly weighing of the packaging in each classroom and the “Wednesday better without plastic” to encourage the reduction, among many others. Energy consumption is another aspect that we have worked on at different levels, at the curricular level, studying the different ways we have to reduce our energy consumption, studying the different ways we have to obtain energy and promoting responsible consumption in all aspects. And we cannot forget water, with the creation of the first Sea Classroom in a school. This project has been a real act of collaboration and participation with various entities linked to the sea. Among them are the Palma Aquarium, the Vell Marí Foundation, National geographic and Balearia. We have studied in situ our most valuable aquatic plant here in the Mediterranean, Posidonia oceánica, as part of the educational project led by IMEDEA, Posidonia a l’aula.
