As the world commemorates the significance of books and the protection of intellectual property rights, this initiative stands as a beacon of cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

Event Background
In celebration of World Book and Copyright Day, St. Catherine’s Moorlands School and NIKA School are collaborating to foster international literary appreciation and cultural exchange. This event transcends geographical boundaries by providing students from diverse backgrounds with a platform to share insights into the literary treasures of their respective countries or cultures.
Through a shared virtual space on Google Classroom, students will engage in discussions, presentations, and recommendations centered around prominent writers and their works. Participants will have the unique opportunity to explore the rich tapestry of global literature, gaining valuable insights into different cultures and perspectives.
The culmination of this collaborative effort will be the creation of a comprehensive list of book recommendations curated by students, showcasing the diversity and richness of literary traditions worldwide. These recommendations will be published on the International Associations Schools (ISA) webpage dedicated to World Book and Copyright Day, serving as a testament to the power of literature to unite and inspire across borders.
On April 23rd, as the world commemorates the significance of books and the protection of intellectual property rights, this initiative stands as a beacon of cultural exchange and mutual understanding. By fostering a spirit of curiosity and appreciation for literature from around the globe, schools reaffirm their commitment to nurturing global citizenship and intercultural dialogue.
How to participate
Step 1. Register yourself or your group of students using the form provided.
Step 2. Upon registration, you will receive access to the dedicated Google Classroom for the event.
Step 3 In Google Classroom you can:
- Share your favorite book recommendations, engage in discussions, and interact with students from countries worldwide.
- Upload a drawing that graphically represents a favorite book, passage, or poem that you have read or are currently reading.
- Participate in the book exchange: During the days leading up to the celebration of International Book Day, you can bring a book to your school based on your age/grade. Hand it over to teachers and tutors for supervision and categorization by the Literature Department. The book will be wrapped, and a label will be placed indicating:
- Your age/grade
- The book’s language
- The author and/or genre
- A brief recommendation (without revealing the title!)
Students participating in the book delivery must be registered by the teachers involved in this initiative.
What do we intend to do? Through this initiative, we aim to foster a community of readers by encouraging interest and appreciation for literature in all its genres, types, and formats, including short stories, fiction novels, books of poetry, graphic novels, and theater works. Books offer an opportunity to connect with emotions, reflect, and broaden perspectives on universal and essential topics for humanity. We believe it is crucial to impart this value to our students and inspire them to become avid and critical readers.
How will the exchange work? On the day of the celebration, all wrapped and labeled books will be displayed by level on a stand supervised by teachers. Students who have contributed a book for the surprise book exchange may select another book from the stand based on their interest, according to the information provided on the label. Recommended categories for book classification include:
- 6 to 8 years
- 9 to 11 years
- 12 to 15 years
- 15 to 18 years
- Adults
We anticipate enthusiastic student participation in celebrating International Book Day 2024!
A summary of these activities will be published on the dedicated page of the International Schools Association for the event. This summary will include a curated list of recommended literature for further reading.
Rules & Recommendations
Registration is open. The opportunity to register and participate in activities will last from April 23rd to May 23rd, 2024.
Participants must be at least 6 years of age
Ensure that all shared content complies with copyright regulations and respects the intellectual property rights of authors.
Have fun and enjoy the experience of exploring new books, engaging with peers from around the world, and discovering the joy of reading, nurturing a sense of enthusiasm and excitement for literature.
How to Participate
- Schools should do prior work with a group of students in order to participate effectively.
At least some idea of Human Rights across the world and a little bit of rhetorical/persuasive devices (not essential like the prior research).
- There could be listeners/ inactive guests.
